“Treadwater”: A 2-Time Best-Selling Indie Graphic Novel
The series Candlelight is a character driven exploration of the pre-apocalyptic world created in the best-selling graphic novel series Treadwater.
Causing an immediate reaction amongst in-the-know graphic novel fans of the dark & mature sci-fi action genre, Book 1 of Treadwater reached Indie best-seller status in its opening month, achieving 90% of the Walking Dead’s sales in their respective debut month. Positive reviews led to the second book in the Treadwater series significantly outperforming its predecessor when it hit shelves in March 2017, and became the most pre-ordered sequel for an indie title ever according to Diamond Comics Distributors (the worldwide leader in the industry).
The characters and the world created in the Treadwater graphic novels have been expanded upon in other elements of the transmedia franchise including an interactive website, and an augmented reality phone-app. The animated series Candlelight uses this fictional world as a jumping off point, and looks to elevate the franchise, and even the genre with its uniquely nuanced and intimate approach to animated sci-fi action.
CANDLELIGHT: THE SERIES
Candlelight is a 10 episode animated anthology set in a pre-apocalyptic future world torn between utopia and dystopia. A plausible future where technology and medical advances interact with politics & economics to create a global culture on the brink of either transcendence, or collapse.
The series tells 10 personal stories, each in a different animation style, set all around the globe and lead by characters of different races, genders, sexual orientations and nationalities. The stories are tied together by common themes, and their role as parts in a subtly developing larger narrative.
As a series Candlelight taps into a range of genres: Futuristic military action, family drama, political-espionage thriller, mind-bending sci-fi, and even shades of horror. There are stories about social hackers, futuristic samurai, the prisoners at a brutal Siberian prison, a pair of homeless brothers in Jamaica, and a mentally ill child prodigy in the Bronx, to name just a few...
Candlelight’s approach pairs themes of family, culture, and even love, with things like global crime syndicates, androids, and the future of genetic engineering and artificial intelligence. Each chapter is told in a different visual animation styles that mirrors it’s setting and the main character’s unique perspective.
